Beauty Closet

Colleges and universities nationwide have food/hygiene pantries to support students. Due to the rising costs of tuition, living expenses, and other basic needs, these resources are crucial to success. As students strive to advance in their education and careers, having the option to show up confidently is essential. I was introduced to the Career Closet during my time at Santa Monica College (SMC). This closet offered makeup, attire, and other necessities to help students present their best selves as they strive to advance professionally.

This spec project allows companies in the beauty industry to expand academic partnerships via student resource groups by sponsoring closets. Helping students not to strive for perfect skin but to feel uplifted and confident as they pursue their educational and professional goals.

67% percent of college students considering beauty and personal care products a necessity.

Despite Gen-Z and millennial students prioritizing spending on skincare, cosmetics, or other beauty products, purchasing and accessing such products can be especially challenging for those from low-income backgrounds or who suffer from chronic skin conditions.

My experiences utilizing similar resources inspired me to one day find a way to expand these services to students. Considering how sportswear brands target the college market, there’s an opportunity for beauty brands to do the same, but in a more meaningful and impactful way.
